How much does it cost to build an iOS app?

What drives iOS app cost — native versus cross-platform, backend work, store release and ongoing maintenance.

Two apps with identical screens can differ by a factor of five in cost. The difference is almost never the interface — it is what sits behind it and how much of the platform the app has to use.

Native or cross-platform

Native iOS in Swift gives the best access to platform features and the highest polish. Cross-platform with React Native or Flutter produces iOS and Android from one codebase, which usually costs less than building two native apps and more than building one.

If iOS is your only target for the foreseeable future, native is often the simpler choice. If you need both platforms from day one, cross-platform is normally the better economics — unless the app leans heavily on camera, audio, Bluetooth or background processing.

The backend is part of the app budget

Unless the app is fully offline, it needs an API, a database, authentication, file storage and push infrastructure. On many projects this is the larger half of the work, and it is the part most often left out of an initial quote. Ask explicitly whether a mobile estimate includes the server side.

Features that reliably add cost

  • Offline support with sync and conflict resolution.
  • Real-time updates, chat or live location.
  • In-app purchases and subscriptions, including the receipt validation nobody remembers to budget for.
  • Background location, Bluetooth peripherals or hardware integration.
  • Regulated data — health, financial or identity information.

Release and maintenance are recurring

An Apple Developer Program membership is an annual cost. Beyond that, iOS releases a major version every year, and apps need updating to keep working well on it. Budget for a maintenance cycle each year even if you add no new features.
